Smart Urban Solutions Tour Last month, we kicked off the programme of a combined Australian/New Zealand 'Smart Urban Solutions' mission to the Netherlands. The week long visit focused on urban (re)development, smart mobility, the future of energy and sustainable building; innovative solutions created to alleviate pressure on our living environment. Some of the highlights included a tour of the NDSM wharf in Amsterdam, an area redeveloped from a former shipyard to an inspiring hub of creativity; a tour of the ZuidAsDok, a large project improving the accessibility of the northern Randstad and the Innovation Expo in Rotterdam, where several hundred Dutch innovations around mobility, energy, circular economy and the built-up environment were presented. After visiting the Eindhoven University of Technology on Tuesday, the day was concluded with a reception hosted by H.E. Matthew Neuhaus, Australian Ambassador to the Netherlands. On Wednesday Lord Mayor of Rotterdam, Ahmed Aboutaleb, kindly hosted the group for a vegan dinner at Rotterdam City Hall, speaking inspiringly about stimulating innovation and tackling challenges around the environment, quality of food, affordability and productivity gains. During their final two days, the group visited TU Delft, followed by the Australians and New Zealanders visiting Delft Green village, where students experiment with sustainable building and even a hyper loop. They got a tour of the famous Markthal in Rotterdam and met with Winy Maas,
co-founder and director of MVRDV, a global operating architecture and urbanism practice that counts Markthal as one of its signature projects. We would like to thank everyone from the Netherlands for kindly hosting the delegation and we look forward to following up on the visit with the delegates after they have returned home to Australia and New Zealand!

Heads of Consular MissionsConsul-General Frank van Beuningen attended the yearly ‘Heads of Consular Missions’ reception on invitation of the premier of New South Wales, the Hon. Gladys Berejiklian MP. After the participants were welcomed by the Hon. Niall Blair
MP, minister for Trade and Industry, the premier expressed how much she valued the work of the Consular Corps to re-enforce the policy of the government of New South Wales. “Your countries have so much to offer for us”, according to the premier. She further proudly emphasised that she is impressed by the efforts of the athletes of the 2018 Invictus Games in Sydney and wished them all good luck. With many representatives of NSW ministries and other officials present at the event, it provided an insightful platform to network and exchange ideas. Although the reception took place in the beautiful “stranger’s function room” of the Parliament House in Sydney, the guests didn’t feel like strangers at all!

Biennale and the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the two prominent Dutch photographers are presenting their work in a series of exhibitions that show photographic art from world's most renowned photographers. The Craig's Royal Hotel Ballarat thus presents a Regional Victoria exclusive of two significant Dutch photographers, paying homage to the traditional Flemish masters of the 16th Century. 10 through to February 24 2019, seven days a week and is free to attend.
Invictus Games 2018 SydneyLast months' 2018 Invictus Games saw pride, courage and raw emotions. On Saturday 20 October, Consul-General Frank van Beuningen attended the official opening in Sydney. The Netherlands was well represented with 24
participants in 11 sports disciplines, bringing along their personal impressive stories and ambitions. Where at Sydney airport the Dutch defense attaché in Australia, Lieutenant Colonel Elmar Hermans and his partner Simone Steendijk welcomed the participants enthusiastically, their families and friends were eagerly awaiting them at Luna Park. In the midst of the Games a touching moment was seen that cut through the heart of what Invictus means, when wheelchair tennis player Paul Guest from the UK was comforted by his Dutch playing partner Edwin Vermetten at Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre, after the sound of a helicopter caused Guest's PTSD to resurface, momentarily
leaving him unable to take his serve. Competitors across the world either beginning, or continuing, their journey to recovery now have the 2020 Invictus Games The Hague in the Netherlands to look forward to!
Gerard Willems farewell Yesterday the Consul-General attended the farewell concert of Dutchman Associate Professor Gerard Willems AM. It marked the end of 37 years of teaching, research and performance at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music as Chair of Piano. The packed audience was treated to
an entertaining and heartwarming evening with former pupils like prize-winning pianist and conductor Jackie Wong from China, and colleague SSO principal double bass Kees Boersma joining Gerard Willems on stage. The program included beautiful renditions of Beethoven, Mozart, Strauss, Bach, Elgar, Chopin and Piazzolla in the Verbrugghen Hall at ‘the Con’. Gerard has had an important impact on many musicians and he is the first Australian and Dutch pianist to record the complete Beethoven Sonata cycle on CD, which was awarded Best Classical Album of the Year twice. The evening was concluded with Gerard’s wife and young daughter joining on stage, after which Consul General Frank van Beuningen gave
a farewell speech and managed to persuade Gerard to give the enthusiastic audience an encore. What a wonderful event it was. We wish Gerard and his family all the best in their new adventures!
Travelling? Check your passport!
Frequently, consular staff in Bondi Junction is confronted with disappointed travellers being refused by airlines on their way to their travel destination (e.g. Bali) because their passport is no longer valid for 6 months after leaving the country of destination. Please be aware airlines are quite strict about this rule because they will be fined and are responsible (read: have to pay) for your return home if the country of destination refuses you entry. A destination as Bali does not accept hand written emergency
passports which means that a traveller has to apply for a new regular passport. This might take up to 2 weeks. To make sure you can enjoy your holiday, always check the validity of your passport before booking! Can't make it to your appointment? Please cancel! Applications for passports are by appointment only. Book an appointment using our appointment website. If, for any reason, you are not able to make the appointment, please cancel the appointment. At the moment we are experiencing a waiting list for appointments. Other applicants would really appreciate it if you would cancel your appointment to shorten the waiting list. Bring a complete application to shorten processing time Almost 80% of the passport applications is incomplete which causes delay in the processing of the application. Top 3 of missing items: a copy of the Dutch passport, proof of legal residence in Australia, correct passport pictures. On the Dutch website you can use the new passport tool to get a check list of all documents you need to bring to your appointment. A passport tool
for the English website is in development. Applicants with only Dutch citizenship can obtain proof of legal residence at https://www.border.gov.au/Busi/Visa. Applicants that also have Australian citizenship can bring the original and a copy of their Australian passport. All foreign documents must be legalised/authenticated by the
appropriate authorities. Australian documents (e.g. birth certificates, marriage certificates) must be authenticated by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs with a so called ‘apostille stamp’. Apostille stamps are obtainable from the Australian Passport Office, authentication section in your state’s capital. Passport photos Bring correct passport photos. In general, passport photos used for Australian passports are too big to use for your application for a Dutch passport. Please check the
website for the requirement.
